As a friend of mine said: "Who would have thought that Pesto without parmesan can be so tasty?", it's incredible how well the Nutritional Yeast replaces parmesan, I could honestly not taste the difference when I made this pesto. It's really tasty and if you replace the usual glutenous pasta (which often contains eggs), with gluten-free pasta, it can become a rather healthy pasta dinner. It's not common to add lime to pesto to my knowledge, but I think it compliments and lifts up the other ingredients very well.
Basil is a member of the Mint family and beyond being a great compliment to different dishes, it contains many nutrients: mainly vitamin K, essential for blood clotting, as well as vitamin A, iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium.
In Ayurveda basil is seen as a warming herb. It has a sweet, bitter and pungent taste and promotes health to the respiratory system. It is used to settle stomach disorders and to enhance digestion. It can be taken to relieve colds, flu, stomach cramp and nausea. It is also mildly sedative and can be taken during stressful periods and for insomnia by simply adding a bunch of leaves to boiling water, let it cook for a minute, take it off the heat and let it steep under a lid for ten minutes.
